Pell City's First Community Garden

Once upon a time, a group of Pell City citizens realized that the city's residents, particularly the youth, were out of touch with where food really came from, how to grow their own, and what to do with fresh produce. They realized that in today's world, most children do not see fresh food grown in their community or in their home.  When they do see gardening, it's become a novelty.

 

This group decided that Pell City deserved a public place where growing fresh fruits and veggies was normal, where children and other residents could learn how to grow their own food and more.  Organizations will work with the gardens as a teaching tool, giving back a portion of their harvests to the needy in our community. 

 

Partnerships with training and education organizations such as the Auburn Cooperative Extension Services (ACES), 4H, and the St. Clair County Master Gardeners will work to provide educational workshops and learning opportunities to try out new techniques, learn organic pest control methods, build rain-water barrels, and much more. 

 

The garden will also be a place for wonderful social opportunities - gathering with others for quarterly work-days to take care of the gardens, plant and harvest together, and enjoy the company of our city's residents. 

 

How can you be a part of implementing Pell City's first community garden? 

Follow us on Facebook to keep updated on our progress as we work with the city to secure a place for the Community Garden at the Avondale park property.  Once our location is secured, we'll need help securing donations of materials and services to help build the garden - everything from top soil to compost, irrigation installation, planting, and more!  Our goal is to install the structure of the garden over the winter, and have the raised beds and community garden plots ready for planting by Spring 2016.  Once running, plots will be available on a first-come first-served basis, with at least half being reserved for organizations that will use them to teach others.  There will be several community areas that anyone can come by and work on.
